The importance of collection societies & potential revenue income streams.
This post gives you an overview of the music collection agencies worldwide.
PRS
- Pay royalties to members when their work is performed, broadcast,
streamed, downloaded, reproduced, played in public or used in film and TV. They
will collect my royalties through licensing agreements with music users.

MCPS - MCPS pay me royalties when my
music is:
- copied as physical
products, such as CDs and DVDs
- streamed or downloaded
- used in TV, film or radio
PPL Phonographic
Performance Limited –
Administrate royalties due to me from records. PPL is the UK’s music licensing company for over 110,000 performers
and recording rights-holders. We have been licensing the use of recorded music
in the UK since 1934.
BMI (USA) is now the largest music rights organisation in the U.S. and is the bridge between songwriters and the
businesses and organisations that want to play their music publicly.
ASCAP (USA) is a membership association of more
than 735,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers. ASCAP license over
11.5 million ASCAP songs and scores to the businesses that play them publicly,
then send the money to our members as royalties.
SESAC (USA) works a little like an intermediary
for the artists it serves. The artists form an agreement with SESAC, and the
organization enforces copyright on the artists' behalf. Money brought in is
distributed to the artists.
New Developments:
PPL PRS Ltd is a new company, equally owned by PPL and
PRS for Music. It has been created to provide customers with a streamlined
music licensing service – TheMusicLicence – with a single point of contact to
make it easier to legally play and perform music in public.
Previously,
businesses and organisations would have had to purchase two separate licences
from PPL and PRS for Music instead.
British PRS,
Swedish STIM and German GEMA established ICE Services as a
European supplier of royalties administration services to collecting societies
in 2015. This means they are technically outsourcing some back-office
functions, while still managing them in a collecting society environment according to: https://www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/the-future-of-digital-performance-rights-management/

Blockchain

allows for total transparency in regard to the processing and payment of
royalties from my songs etc. Once the application of this technology is used by the major players (eg. Spotify,
EMI, iTunes etc) this technology could potentially revolutionise the industry in my and other artists favour.
